Morning everyone. Or possibly afternoon. Evening even. Whatever time of day you choose to visit I give you cordial greetings. Followed by a little squeal of excitement because look at this. It’s a three bedroom duplex apartment designed by Tom Dixon (I know!) and there are only a few of them available.
The Modern House, which is selling this one for £2,100,00, describes it as limited edition, which is certainly the first time I have heard that applied to a property before but it does make it sound more exciting. On the other hand, if you look at it like that, my house is limited edition as there’s only one of it. Still let’s not quibble. On with the viewing…
The property is part of the Greenwich Peninsula development and this is one of a number of Tom Dixon Design Research studio apartments that are being sold off plan. The penthouse measures around 1,753 sq ft and the lower level has a master bedroom with en-suite shower room, two more double bedrooms, a bathroom and utility room.
The upper level is arranged as a single living, dining and kitchen space, with huge windows. This area has steps up to a large private roof terrace.
According to the blurb: “As a deliberate counterpoint to the sterility of most new developments, Dixon’s Design Research Studio has employed Art Deco motifs, and robust industrial materials including copper cabinetry inspired by traditional British crafts, enamel splashbacks by the people who make the London Underground signage, glazed bricks and dichroic glass. The apartments are available in a choice of two different colour palettes.”
Nice innit! If you were in any doubt about the beauty of copper and brass metals, particuarly when contrasted with black and paired with teal, this should put paid to that.
Now, where next…Worrabout this then? It’s in Somerset and it’s on the market for £1,300,000 via Savills. It has five/six bedrooms and is set in 1.25 acres.
I love the interiors which aren’t too country cottage but stick to a fairly restrained colour palette so it feels modern. I would lose that flowery table cloth immediately – when I first looked at the picture I thought it was silver and was thinking how wonderfully funky it was. Still, that’s a minor detail.
I’m not sure about that light over the table either but it puts me in mind of something I came across at a client’s house the other week which I thought was cool. She had a huge glass jar on the floor of the kitchen and called it a memory jar. Everytime the family, or individual members of it, did something that was really great fun, or made everyone laugh or was an experience they didn’t want to forget, they wrote it down on a piece of paper and put it in the jar. Then, if ever anyone feels a bit down, they go and pull a memory out of the jar and start to feel better. Keep taking memories till the mood improves. Isn’t that a good idea? I might start one of those.
Anyway, back to the house – there’s an indoor pool with a counter current jet as well as outbuildings, including a workshop and a children’s play area and pony paddock in the grounds. Word of advice: if you have children never refer to this as such unless you are prepared to buy a pony. It’s a field.
Finally, this: in Bovingdon Road, in SW6, which is on the market for £3,800,000 via Domus Nova. It’s a four bedroom house which has been newly refurbished by Brazilian architect Marina Breves.
The living space is large and open plan and there is also a home cinema, study, utility and cellar.
The kitchen opens out onto the garden via large glass doors and I’m pretty sure I recognise those lights from Such & Such too. Mind you the stools, which are a good shape, jar a little with the white scheme if you ask me. I’d prefer black and white or wooden but again, I’m picking over details. That’s my job, can’t help it.
I much prefer the subtle colours of this pendant lighting over the table here and you can just see through to the open plan kitchen and out into the garden beyond.
It’s a tough call this week people. Which would you buy?
